It was great to meet so many fellow data protection enthusiasts at the PDP Data Protection Conference yesterday (10th September).
Of all the messages coming out of the conference, three stuck with me:
(1) Data Protection is no longer relegated to the sidelines – it is now a mainstream issue.
(2) Data Protection is an enabler – it enables you to utlise one of your most valuable assets (personal information), whether this is for efficient service delivery or commercial benefit.
(3) The new Data Protection Regulation is coming, and it will bring significant change – but organisations who are compliant now, who actively manage data protection and engage in best practice will not find the change so painful to manage. It is those organisation still struggling to comply with the existing law that will have most work, the steepest learning curve and possibly the greatest shock when the new Regulation comes into force.
All in all a very interesting day.
